DIY Clay Gift Tags

These handmade clay gift tags are easy to make and add the perfect finishing touch to your Christmas presents this year. Personalise them with the recipients name or a message! You need air dry white modelling clay, a rolling pin and cookie cutters.

Start with a apple sized ball of clay and warm it up by rolling it between your hands. Spread it flat on a clean dry surface (I covered my table in cling film first for easy cleaning) and roll it out with a rolling pin to approx 5mm thick. Using cookie cutters of any shape or size, cut out your shapes from the clay. You can use wet hands to smooth any bumps or cracks in the clay. Poke a hole into the clay with a pencil or wooden skewer. This will allow you to hang it from ribbon or string. Carefully place these down to air-dry overnight. Depending on the thickness of your clay tags they may need 24-48 hours to completely dry.

To add a message or personalise the gift tags I used a set of small letter stamps and a regular black ink pad (designed for stamping) which I found worked well on the clay and dried very quickly.
It can be tricky to space the letters out evenly but any wonky letters just adds to the homemade charm! With some leftover clay I made little stars which can be used in parceling up your gifts.

I'll have more Christmas themed tutorials coming up soon, including creative ways to wrap gifts. If you enjoyed this DIY why not check out the This Fashion is Mine DIY Archive for many more tutorials!
